History of Kilmore

Our ancient Parish Church has a long and varied history, dating back to the 5th Century. It is reckoned to be amongst the oldest Christian settlements in Ireland, and has several important features. The early round tower dating from the 11th or 12th Century is enclosed within the present tower. In the Baptistry there is a list of Vicars and Rectors going back to 1287. At the chancel steps there is a gravestone where the Rev George Walker of Derry Fame, is buried. The chancel was added in 1876, and under the Holy Table is the enterance to the Richardson Family Vault. Our famous Hill Organ built in 1865, and recently restored at a cost of
£52,000  was originally built for Trinity Church, Lower Gardiner Street, Dublin. It was installed here in Kilmore in 1919, as a memorial to those of the Parish who had served in the First World War.
